Description

Rectanal Enema is a hypertonic rectal fluid containing sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate and disodium phosphate dodecahydrate. The solution has a laxative effect and can be used by adults, adolescents, and children over 3 years of age. The product is ready-to-use and comes in a special, easy-to-use bottle.

Composition

The active substances of the drug are: sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate and disodium phosphate dodecahydrate.

100 ml of solution contains 14 g of sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate and 5 g of disodium phosphate dodecahydrate on an anhydrous basis.

The other ingredients are: sodium benzoate (E 211), sodium propionate (E 281), purified water.

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

The recommended rectal dose for children aged 3-12 years is 60-90 ml, while for adolescents and adults it is 120-150 ml. The product is administered rectally, in the evening before the planned examination/procedure and on the day of surgery. Do not use more often than once daily. The laxative effect occurs within 2-5 minutes of administration.

Method of administration:
1. Screw the applicator onto the bottle, lubricate the applicator with Vaseline or liquid paraffin.
2. Insert the tip into the rectum while trying to tighten the rectal sphincter.
3. Squeeze the bottle to introduce the solution into the intestine.
4. Stay in the same position for 2-5 minutes.

Action

The drug has a laxative effect by reducing water absorption, which causes fecal masses to soften and increase in volume. This results in increased urge to urinate and a bowel movement within 2-5 minutes of administration.

Indications

Rectanal Enema is intended for use when there is a need to cleanse the colon before surgical procedures, diagnostic tests, or before childbirth. It is also indicated for occasional constipation, such as after surgery or the use of contrast media.

Contraindications

The solution should not be used in cases of allergy to any of the ingredients, or if you have or suspect perforation of the large intestine, intestinal obstruction, anal adhesions, or ulcerative colitis. It is also not recommended for use in the following cases: severe general condition, heart disease, congestive heart failure, severe renal failure, hypertension, appendicitis, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting of unknown cause, dehydration, or during pregnancy.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Rare side effects (affecting 1-10 people in 10,000) include: transient hypocalcaemia and hyponatraemia, which in turn may lead to dehydration.
Frequent use of Rectanal Enema may lead to disturbances in the function of the large intestine, e.g. diarrhea.

Warnings and precautions

Special caution should be exercised when using the product on patients who are unconscious, have limited consciousness, or have heart disease. In such cases, application should only be performed in the presence of qualified medical personnel.
You should be especially careful if you suffer from kidney problems, take diuretics and other medications that may cause water and electrolyte disturbances, or have an artificial anus.
If bleeding or severe intestinal cramps occur after administration of the solution, consult a doctor immediately.
Exercise particular caution in elderly people, use sporadically.
Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children, at a temperature below 25°C.

Use of other medications

Please tell your doctor or pharmacist about all the medicines you are taking, have recently taken or might take, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Rectanal Enema may interact with calcium channel blockers (some drugs used to treat hypertension and heart disease, e.g. verapamil) and diuretics - changes in electrolyte concentrations may occur.

Taking the medicine with food and drink

You should drink additional fluids after taking the medicine.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The drug is contraindicated for use during pregnancy.
It is only permissible to administer the drug to a pregnant woman before delivery.

Use of the drug in children and adolescents

The product is suitable for children over 3 years of age.
Use in children aged 3-5 years should only be on the recommendation of a doctor and under his strict supervision.
If your child does not have a bowel movement after administering the solution, contact your doctor immediately as there is a risk of dehydration.

Driving and operating machinery

After applying Rectanal Enema, do not drive or operate machinery for at least 12 hours.
