Goldenseal

Goldenseal is a dietary supplement based on the plant of the same name. The Goldenseal plant, also known as Orange Root, contains vitamins (A, C, E, B), minerals (iron, calcium, magnesium) and an alkaloid called berberine with anti-infectious properties. That is why Goldenseal is known for its antiviral, antiparasitic and antifungal benefits.

The plant is used by many manufacturers: Goldenseal Seacom, Zenyth, Natures Way and GNC.

Goldenseal benefits for the digestive system: Thanks to its anti-infectious properties, goldenseal root helps relieve symptoms caused by Helicobacter pylori in the stomach (where it is responsible for the development of duodenal ulcers) or other inflammatory bowel diseases. The preparation is also recommended by manufacturers for cases of indigestion or bloating, as well as for diarrhoea.

Goldenseal benefits for the sinuses: Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, the preparation can also be used for sinusitis.

Goldenseal benefits for metabolism: The manufacturer claims that berberine is useful in reducing insulin resistance and normalising blood sugar levels. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, do not stop the treatment prescribed by your doctor. Use Goldenseal as an adjunct to treatment, as it is a dietary supplement and not a medicine.

Goldenseal anti-infective benefits: for the skin (dandruff), oral cavity (mouth ulcers, gum inflammation), eyes (blepharitis, conjunctivitis).

Goldenseal is contraindicated in people with liver or cardiovascular disease or those diagnosed with high blood pressure. Goldenseal is also contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women. The dietary supplement may also interact with a number of medications.

In addition, people with chronic kidney disease should avoid taking medications and dietary supplements without consulting their doctor.

It is recommended to take Goldenseal during meals, 2 capsules per day. Read the package leaflet before use, as different manufacturers may use different concentrations of goldenseal and the dosage may therefore vary.

Always read the package leaflet, as different companies may have different instructions. In principle, Goldenseal should not be taken for more than 2 weeks/month, or for more than 2 months.

The manufacturer does not recommend the use of Goldenseal by pregnant women or during breastfeeding.

Goldenseal may interact with anticoagulant medication, increasing the risk of bleeding. It may also interact with digoxin, increasing its concentration in the blood and thus the risk of side effects. It also potentially interacts with medications metabolised by cytochrome P450. Concomitant administration with tetracycline may decrease its effect.
