Citicoline (cytidyl-5'-diphosphocholine), also known as CDP choline, is an endogenous compound produced by the body. It occurs naturally in nervous tissue, where it has neuroprotective functions. Citicoline is also a precursor of phosphatidylcholine - the basic building block of phospholipids in cell membranes, as well as of one of the body's most important neurotransmitters - acetylcholine. For this reason, CDP choline is an important element of a properly functioning nervous system. Citicoline is also a source of bioavailable cytidine, which is then converted to uridine and in this form works synergistically with choline.
