When working with an ordinary computer mouse, the bones of the forearm are in an unnatural crossed position, and after a short time the whole forearm is painful and tired. Long-term use of such a mouse can lead to medical problems that require medical attention.

Carpal tunnel syndrome or computer mouse syndrome

The use of regular office mice has been linked to a modern computer disease called carpal tunnel syndrome (also known as carpal tunnel syndrome or RSI). It is a compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, which is located at the wrist. The median nerve that passes through this tunnel transmits impulses from the brain to the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and part of the ring finger. In healthy people who do not overload the wrist area, the carpal tunnel offers enough space for the passage of the median nerve, so that the fingers are sufficiently supplied with impulses from the brain and thus maintain full functionality and sensitivity.

The basic symptoms of this syndrome include tingling and pain in the first three fingers (thumb, index and middle finger) similar to a crossed arm. There is also a deterioration of hand sensitivity, manifested by a reduced ability to grasp firmly and a general clumsiness of the hand (which eventually leads to objects falling from the hand). Symptoms are often present even at rest, and the pain may extend to the forearm and shoulder. In the initial stages, the solution is simple - immediately stop using a regular computer mouse and regularly exercise your hand. In an advanced stage, endoscopic wrist surgery is required to free the carpal tunnel or increase its patency. In the fully developed syndrome, it is necessary to cut the carpal ligaments, which removes pressure on the nerve.

According to the data of the State Institute of Health (SZU), this is the most common occupational disease in the Czech Republic, 500 patients were registered in 2017 and more patients are added every year.
