Lokelma contains the active substance sodium zirconium cyclosilicate.
Lokelma is used to treat hyperkalemia in adults. Hyperkalemia means there is an increased concentration of potassium in the blood.
Lokelma lowers high potassium levels in the body and helps to keep them at normal levels. As it passes through the stomach and intestine, Lokelma binds to potassium and the two are carried together out of the body in the stool, lowering the amount of potassium in the body.

Do not take Lokelma:
- If you are allergic to the active substance.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Lokelma.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
Task:
Do not take this medicine during pregnancy as there is no information on the use of this medicine during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding:
No effects on newborns/infants are anticipated as systemic exposure of breast-feeding women to Lokelma is negligible. Lokelma can be used during breast-feeding.

Driving and using machines:
This medicine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive or use machines.

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

How much to take:
Starting dose – to adjust high potassium levels to normal:
- The recommended dose is 10 g – taken three times a day.
- The medicine takes effect after a day or two.
- Do not take this starting dose for more than three days.
Maintenance dose – to keep potassium levels within normal limits after it has been reduced:
- The recommended dose is 5 g – taken once a day.
- Your doctor will decide whether you need a higher dose (10 g once a day) or a lower dose (5 g every other day).
- Do not take the maintenance dose more than 10 mg once a day.

Administration of this medicine:
- Try to take Lokelma at the same time every day.
- You can take this medicine with or without food.

How to take:
- Open the sachet and pour the powder into a glass with approximately 45 ml of still (non-carbonated) water.
- Mix well and drink the tasteless liquid immediately.
- The powder does not dissolve in water and appears as a cloudy liquid. The white powder will quickly settle on the glass.
If this happens, mix the liquid again with water and drink it all.
- Rinse the glass with more water and drink it all to get all the medicine.
