What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a chemical compound belonging to carotenoids, i.e. pigments found naturally in plants. It is a metabolite of zeaxanthin and cataxanthin. It can be produced by some species of algae, yeasts and bacteria. The main natural source is the green algae Haematococcus pluvialis , and the astaxanthin enclosed in capsules from the American company Now Foods is obtained from the extract of this algae. Taking advantage of the fact that astaxatin dissolves in fats, the capsules have an oil filling from Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
