Pharmaceutical Council
Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is a plant from the Asteraceae family and has been used for its beneficial properties in skin care. Also known as buttercup or calendula, it is high in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant substances (flavonoids). It also has antiseptic properties and effectively contributes to the healing of minor wounds and superficial lesions.
Its main use is external, topically, in lotions, creams, balms, and liquid extracts. Due to its soothing and moisturizing properties, calendula is perfect for the care of oily, combination, and more sensitive skin. We can also find it in facial toners (it exerts antibacterial action and soothes damage caused by sunlight). It is also an emollient and helps maintain the softness of even the finest and most delicate skin. For this reason, it is present in creams to relieve diaper rash.
Another, less common use is as an ingredient in dietary supplements. Due to its antioxidant carotenoid content, it supports eye health and counteracts free radical damage, delaying cellular aging. If you have any doubts about using a calendula product, consult a professional.
