Indications:
Piperacillin belongs to a group of medicines known as ‘broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotics’. It can kill many types of bacteria. Tazobactam can prevent some bacteria that are resistant to the effects of piperacillin from surviving. This means that when piperacillin and tazobactam are taken together, more types of bacteria are killed.

Perasin is used in adults and adolescents to treat bacterial infections, such as those affecting the lower respiratory tract (lungs), urinary tract (kidneys and bladder), abdomen, skin or blood. Perasin can be used to treat bacterial infections in patients with low white blood cell counts (low resistance to infection).

Perasin is given to children aged 2-12 years to treat abdominal infections such as appendicitis, peritonitis (infection of the fluid and lining of the abdominal organs) and gallbladder (infection of the bile ducts). Perasin can be used to treat bacterial infections in children with low white blood cell counts (low resistance to infection).

In certain serious infections, your doctor may consider it necessary to administer Perasin in combination with other antibiotics.

Contraindications:
Do not use Perasin:
- if you are allergic to piperacillin or tazobactam or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).

Precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Perasin.

Pregnancy, lactation and fertility:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or any healthcare professional for advice before you are given this medicine. Your doctor will decide whether
Perasin is right for you.

The combination piperacillin/tazobactam may reach the fetus or be excreted in breast milk. If you are breast-feeding, your doctor will decide if Perasin is suitable for you.

Driving and using machines:
Perasin is not expected to affect your ability to drive or use machines.

Method of administration:
Your doctor or another healthcare professional will give you this medicine by infusion (drip over 30 minutes) into a vein.

Dosage:
The dose of medicine administered depends on the condition you are being treated for, your age and the presence or absence of kidney disease.

Adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over:
The recommended dose of piperacillin/tazobactam is 4 g/0.5 g, administered into a vein (directly into the bloodstream), every 6-8 hours.

Children aged 2 to 12 years:
In children with abdominal infections, the recommended dose is piperacillin 100 mg/tazobactam 12.5 mg/kg body weight, administered every 8 hours into a vein (directly into the bloodstream).
The recommended dose for children with low white blood cell counts is piperacillin 80 mg/tazobactam 10 mg/kg body weight, given every 6 hours into a vein (directly into the bloodstream).
The doctor will calculate the dose based on the child's weight, but each individual dose will not exceed the dose of Perasin 4 g/0.5 g.

You will be given Perasin until the signs of infection have completely disappeared (5 to 14 days).

Patients with kidney disease:
Your doctor may need to reduce the dose of Perasin or how often it is given. Your doctor may also need to carry out blood tests to make sure that your treatment is being given at the correct dose, especially if you need to take this medicine for a long time.

Composition:
- The active substances are piperacillin and tazobactam.
Each vial contains 2 g piperacillin (as piperacillin sodium) and 0.25 g tazobactam (as tazobactam sodium).
Each vial contains 4 g piperacillin (as piperacillin sodium) and 0.5 g tazobactam (as tazobactam sodium).
- The medicine does not contain any other ingredients.
