Orthosiphon

Ortosiphon is available in the form of capsules, each containing powder from the leaves of Orthosiphon stamineus. This pharmaceutical form ensures accurate dosing and easy use, eliminating the inconvenience of the plant's taste or the preparation of traditional infusions.

Orthosiphon capsules are recommended as a natural adjuvant in a number of conditions involving water retention, mild renal dysfunction or metabolic disorders associated with the accumulation of nitrogenous waste products. The main indications include:

• Stage I hypertension, where the diuretic effect helps reduce plasma volume and, consequently, lower blood pressure;
• Urinary tract infections, due to the plant's ability to support the elimination of bacteria and inflammation in the urinary tract;
• Renal microlithiasis, Ortosiphon helping to prevent the formation of stones by increasing the elimination of urea, uric acid and chlorides;
• Gout and hyperuricaemia, by facilitating the excretion of uric acid;
• Weight loss, Ortosiphon supporting the elimination of excess water retained in the tissues and contributing to the detoxification of the body.

The product is administered in a dose of 2 capsules twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening, after main meals. The capsules should be swallowed with an adequate amount of water to facilitate absorption and support the diuretic effect.

During the treatment, it is recommended to drink an adequate amount of fluids to avoid possible dehydration.

Ortosiphon is not recommended for people suffering from severe renal or heart failure, as its diuretic effect may accentuate existing hydroelectrolytic imbalances.

It is also contraindicated in children, pregnant women or breastfeeding women, as there is insufficient data on its safety in these population groups.

Depending on the associated condition, Ortosiphon can be used alone or in combination with other herbal products.

Its effectiveness is maximised when accompanied by a balanced diet and regular fluid intake.

Ortosiphon is generally well tolerated. However, some people may experience mild side effects such as:

• gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, abdominal discomfort);
• mild headaches related to dehydration;
• skin allergic reactions (rare).

To reduce the risk of unwanted reactions, it is recommended to strictly adhere to the dosage and maintain adequate hydration.

Due to its diuretic action, Ortosiphon may interact with medicines that alter the water-electrolyte balance, such as loop diuretics or antihypertensives. Concomitant use with these medicines should be undertaken with caution and under medical supervision.

No significant interactions with food have been reported, but a diet high in salt may counteract the diuretic effect of the product.

To date, no documented cases of overdose with Ortosiphon have been reported. However, excessive consumption may lead to dehydration, hypotension, electrolyte loss and gastrointestinal discomfort.

In case of accidental overdose, it is recommended to discontinue administration, rehydrate orally and, if necessary, seek medical advice.

The product should be stored in a dry place, away from direct light and heat sources, at temperatures below 25°C. Keep out of reach of children. The expiry date is printed on the packaging, and after opening, it is recommended to consume within the period specified by the manufacturer.
