Description Valerian

The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a medicinal plant used mainly as a remedy for insomnia, nervousness and stress. It is available in the form of valerian tea, supplements such as Relaxirem or Nervocalmin relaxation, and essential oils. Valerian for salad is a different plant (Valerianella locusta) with different properties.

What are the benefits of valerian?

Valerian is particularly recommended for insomnia, stress, anxiety, restlessness, muscle tension and worry. It has sedative, anxiolytic and calming effects. It is generally taken in supplement form, such as Stres Control with valerian or Calmogen plant.

It also has benefits for reducing headaches, palpitations, nervousness and tremors. It acts on a neurotransmitter in the brain, thereby regulating nerve impulses.

What does valerian contain?

Valerian has therapeutic value due to its specific composition. This plant contains numerous compounds with anxiolytic, relaxing and sedative effects, namely isovaleramide, isovaleric acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid and caffeic acid. It also contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and small amounts of minerals and vitamins. Valerian supplements contain dried valerian extract, sometimes in combination with other ingredients.

In what forms is valerian available?

Valerian is available as tea, valerian tincture, essential oil, and supplements containing valerian, including in combination with other active ingredients, such as Emocalm or Valerian Hofigal. Valerian in supplements and teas – Valeriana officinalis – is different from the valerian used in salads – valerian salad is made with the plant Valerianella locusta. Valeriana officinalis should not be consumed as such in salads or other recipes.

How is valerian administered?

Valerian supplements are usually taken 1 capsule 1-3 times a day, as needed. Always read and follow the manufacturer's recommendations and your doctor's instructions.

Valerian tea is usually consumed 1-2 times a day, generally in the evening before bedtime. To prepare the tea, place 1 teaspoon of dried plant in 200 ml of boiling water and leave the container covered for a quarter of an hour.

Is valerian recommended for insomnia?

Valerian has the ability to induce sleep, reducing anxiety, insomnia and nervousness. It can therefore be administered mainly in the form of tea or supplements such as Somn Control with valerian from Naturalis, Nervocalmin Somn Ușor, Persedon or Dormax.

What are the contraindications for valerian?

Valerian is not recommended during pregnancy, breastfeeding or in case of allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the product's ingredients. Valerian should not be administered to children and adolescents without the advice of a specialist doctor. Valerian can induce drowsiness, affecting the ability to drive motor vehicles. It is contraindicated to take it concomitantly with certain antidepressants, sedatives, and anti-anxiety medications. Consult your doctor before taking valerian if you are undergoing medical treatment or have certain chronic diseases (e.g. kidney or liver failure). The combination of valerian and alcohol is also contraindicated.

What side effects can valerian cause?

Valerian is generally a safe supplement with no side effects if taken in the recommended doses. Excessive use may cause headaches, dizziness, stomach discomfort, agitation, weakness, irritability, apathy, and insomnia. Some people may be allergic to plants in this family. Addiction may also occur with long-term use or in large quantities. Excessive use may also cause hyperactivity.
