Red yeast rice is produced by the fungus Monascus Purpureus. It grows on rice and produces a characteristic red pigment, hence the name.
The active substance in red rice yeast is "monacolin K" with the effect of maintaining normal concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
