This supplement contains the most absorbable form of folic acid, 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). Unlike folic acid, which is a synthetic form of folate, 5-MTHF is biologically active in the body.
Approximately 10% to 25% of the population has a defective MTHFR enzyme which results in a 40% to 60% reduction in the ability to convert folic acid to its biologically active form. Kirkman® uses the 5-MTHF form of folate to accommodate individuals who may have difficulty absorbing folic acid.
