Silymarin

Silymarin contains silibin, a natural flavonoid found in the fruit of Sylybum Marianum.

Silymarin is indicated as an adjuvant (not a basic treatment) in the treatment of acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis of dietary, ethanolic or viral origin. Silymarin can prevent liver damage in the case of treatment with other hepatotoxic drugs or in the case of chronic treatment with a large number of active substances.

Silymarin limits the destruction of liver cells, normalises phospholipid metabolism and limits the increase in transaminases (liver enzymes that indicate liver damage).

The therapeutic efficacy of Silymarin is based on two main mechanisms of action. Firstly, silymarin protects the external structure of the liver cell membrane, preventing toxic substances from entering the hepatocyte. Secondly, silymarin stimulates the activity of certain intracellular enzymes, which stimulate protein synthesis, leading to the stimulation of new hepatocyte production and an increase in the liver's regenerative capacity.

Silymarin is available in tablet form, with a recommended preventive dose of 1 tablet 1-2 times a day. The recommended therapeutic dose is 2 tablets 2-3 times a day. The tablets should be swallowed with sufficient water after meals. Take Silymarin exactly as your doctor has told you.

Treatment with silymarin should last for at least 3 months. Silymarin has a low toxicity level and can therefore be taken in the recommended doses without risk for an unlimited period of time.

Silymarin is effective in combating and inhibiting steatosis (fat deposition in liver cells, commonly known as fatty liver) and liver fibrosis.

Silymarin is a medicine intended for adults. Due to its unsuitable pharmaceutical form, the medicine is not recommended for adolescents and children under 6 years of age.

Silymarin should not be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless the risk-benefit ratio has been carefully assessed by your doctor. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Silymarin is contraindicated in people who are allergic to any of the active ingredients or components of this medicine. Silymarin is not recommended for adolescents and children.

Concomitant use of silymarin and alcohol is not recommended, as alcoholic beverages counteract the beneficial effects and regenerative properties of silymarin.

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Very rarely, immune system disorders, skin allergic reactions, gastrointestinal disorders, chest pain and diarrhoea may occur. All side effects subside after discontinuation of treatment. If side effects occur, stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor.
