Onychomycosis is a fungal nail infection, primarily caused by dermatophytes. The infection usually begins at the edge of the nail, which changes color to white-yellow, brown, or green. The fungus grows beneath or within the nail, causing it to thicken and become brittle. Sometimes the nail may partially or completely separate, which can be painful. In some cases, the nail may be completely lost.
Nails—particularly toenails—can become infected with fungus due to excessive moisture, heat, sweat, possibly poor hygiene, or a weakened immune system. Shoes that are too tight and/or sweating can contribute to the development and spread of fungus. Fungal infections are contagious and can be transmitted to others (e.g., in communal showers).
Prevention
- Wash your feet regularly. If you use soap, rinse your feet well to remove all soap residue.
- Dry your feet very well, especially between the toes.
- Wear clean cotton or wool socks.
- Wear shoes that allow your feet to breathe and are not too tight.
- Use an antifungal product on your shoes.
- Wear slippers in areas where many people go barefoot, for example in communal showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools.
Instructions for use
- Excilor® FORTE Color should be applied once a day, preferably after showering. Before applying, clean the nail. If you have nail polish on, remove it completely before applying. Shake the bottle well before use.
- Next, for the treatment, apply an even layer of Excilor® FORTE Color over the entire surface of the nail to be treated.
- Gently remove excess product from the edges of the nail in contact with the skin.
- Allow the nail to dry. This takes between 3 and 5 minutes. For optimal effect, it is advisable to wait up to 5 minutes before putting on socks and/or shoes. After application, a tingling sensation under the nail is normal, indicating that the product is penetrating. Excilor® FORTE Color should not be used on healthy nails. A regular nail lacquer in the same color is available.
- The film formed on top of the nail is resistant to water and physical contact with skin, such as rubbing. However, small pieces of the film may peel off or come loose on the top of the nail. This will not affect the product's effectiveness. Once the film is dry, a coat of nail polish can be applied on top.
- After 24 hours, remove the film. Peel it back at an angle and gently roll it down until the nail is completely free. Warm water may help with removal.
- Reapply the product as directed above. Wash your hands thoroughly after each application.
