Description
Hibiscus flowers have been part of the human diet since ancient times, and their regular consumption is already described in ancient literature. Sudan hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) probably originated in Africa, but is now cultivated in tropical regions around the world. The plant got its name from the sacred bird Ibis, which was the embodiment of the god Thoth, the god of wisdom, creativity and ingenuity, who was called Hib.
The flowers are characterized by a sour taste , which is caused by malic, citric and tartaric acids. But they also contain anthocyanins, mucilages, flavones, pectins or beta-carotene. Calcium, magnesium and iron are the minerals most represented in them, followed by vitamin C and vitamins B1, B3 and B6 .
In the cultivation of hibiscus, the flowers of which are intended for consumption, the same attention is given as in the cultivation of food raw materials for direct consumption. Candied hibiscus slices are excellent not only for direct consumption instead of candy, but also for drinks, to which they add a beautiful color, to salads, to which they add an "exotic" flavor, or to decorate confectionery products, to which they add . an interesting design. A study published at the American Heart Association's annual conference found that drinking a hibiscus drink may help people at risk of cardiovascular disease. What component of hibiscus has this positive effect? Scientists still argue about this, but it is clear that hibiscus flowers contain anthocyanins, which strengthen collagen and improve the function of blood circulation. In tropical areas, a drink made from hibiscus flowers is used because its action is immediate. The liquid penetrates the upper layers of the skin and thus cools the whole body. In addition, the beautiful color of the drink increases the flexibility of blood vessels and thus prevents the formation of bruises or red veins on the body and face. Hibiscus flowers act as an antioxidant, strengthen the immune system and natural defenses , tone the body and mind, refresh and add vitality, support the normal functioning of the intestinal tract and vascular system, have a relaxing effect and, last but not least, support the normal functioning of the respiratory system.
