Collagen

Collagen is available in multiple pharmaceutical and nutraceutical forms, tailored to the needs and preferences of patients:

• Oral solutions of liquid collagen in single-dose vials – for example, Doppelherz Collagen 11,000 Plus, which is easy to administer, has a pleasant taste, and increased bioavailability;
• Soluble powder – such as Collagen Verisol® from Zenyth, which can be added to water, smoothies, yogurts, or desserts;
• Capsules – mainly used for combinations of collagen with turmeric, glucosamine, chondroitin, or MSM (example: Collanol Collagen intact Curcumin or Curcuma Collagen forte)
• Topical forms (creams, serums) – mainly intended for cosmetics

There are also formulas that help the body generate its own collagen, such as Biosil Collagen with silicon and choline.

Hydrolyzed collagen supplements are recommended in a number of situations:

• Joint and bone health – in osteoarthritis, after osteoarticular trauma, post-operatively for cartilage repair, in athletes or overweight people;
• Skin aging – to maintain skin elasticity and firmness, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, improve hydration;
• Strengthening hair and nails – preventing brittleness and stimulating regeneration;
• Adjuvant supplement – in preventing muscle loss and maintaining the function of the musculoskeletal system;
• Demanding professional conditions – people with intense physical activity or jobs involving prolonged physical effort.

The recommended doses vary depending on the formula and concentration, for example:

• Doppelherz Kollagen: 1 single-dose bottle/day (11 g hydrolyzed collagen) taken as is, preferably after a meal.
• Collagen Zenyth: 1–2 measuring spoons (3–6 g powder/day), mixed with liquids. 
• Colafast Colagen Rapid: 1 capsule per day, during or after a meal, with sufficient liquid.

The administration of collagen for joints is contraindicated or requires caution in the following situations:

• Allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients; people with seafood allergies should avoid taking marine collagen.
• Severe kidney disease (caution in case of protein restrictions);
• Pregnant or breastfeeding women – collagen should only be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding on the advice of a doctor.

Collagen is better absorbed in the form of hydrolyzed peptides. Combining it with vitamin C is essential, as this contributes to endogenous collagen synthesis.

Collagen can be combined with glucosamine, chondroitin, or MSM for a synergistic effect on the joints.

Collagen is generally well tolerated, but sometimes the following may occur:

• Gastrointestinal disorders (bloating, nausea, abdominal discomfort)
• Allergic skin reactions (rare, in people with sensitivity to animal proteins)

Collagen does not have any significant drug interactions, but it is advisable to talk to your doctor if you are taking other medications for chronic conditions.

Alcohol and smoking reduce endogenous collagen synthesis, diminishing the effectiveness of supplements. Excessive consumption of simple sugars promotes collagen glycation, counteracting the benefits of supplementation.

Collagen has a good safety profile, but very high doses can cause:

• Stomach discomfort, diarrhea, nausea;
• Electrolyte imbalances in patients with renal failure;

Collagen should be stored in its original packaging, tightly closed, in a dry place, away from light and excessive heat, at an optimal temperature of 15–25°C. Keep out of reach of children. Best consumed before the expiration date printed on the packaging.
