Basic principles of healthy digestion: what helps keep your stomach healthy
Description Cordyceps
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Cordyceps is a genus of ascomycete fungi, which includes approximately 600 species. Most Cordyceps species are endoparasitoids, parasitising mainly insects and other arthropods. Supplements are mainly produced from Cordyceps sinensis, also known as the Tibetan mushroom.
Cordyceps benefits
May increase exercise performance – studies show that the Tibetan mushroom can increase the body's production of adenosine triphosphate, a molecule essential for supplying energy to muscles. This can improve the way the body uses oxygen, especially during exercise. However, Cordyceps has not been shown to improve performance in athletes.
Anti-ageing properties – Older people in Asian countries have traditionally used Cordyceps to reduce fatigue, increase muscle strength and even increase sexual appetite. Researchers believe that the antioxidant properties of the Tibetan mushroom are what explain its anti-ageing potential.
Potential anti-tumour effects – laboratory tests suggest that Cordyceps may have the potential to treat cancer, as well as some side effects of cancer treatments. However, these effects have not yet been proven in humans and more research is needed.
May be an adjunct in controlling type 2 diabetes – Cordyceps may keep blood sugar levels within a healthy range by mimicking the action of insulin. Some evidence suggests that the Tibetan mushroom may also protect against kidney disease, a common complication of diabetes.
Possible benefits for heart health – In China, Cordyceps is approved for treating arrhythmia (a condition in which the heartbeat is irregular). Researchers have attributed Cordyceps' benefits for the heart to the mushroom's adenosine content. Adenosine is a natural compound that has protective effects on the heart. In addition, Cordyceps may also have a beneficial effect on cholesterol by reducing LDL cholesterol levels.
Beneficial role in treating various inflammations – research in this area has shown that when human cells are exposed to Cordyceps, the special proteins that increase inflammation in the body are suppressed. Due to these potential effects, it is believed that the Tibetan mushroom can serve as an anti-inflammatory supplement or medicine. In addition, the anti-inflammatory role has been demonstrated when Cordyceps was applied topically to the inflamed area.
Cordyceps contraindications and warnings
There are not enough specialised studies to accurately determine the effects of Cordyceps on pregnant or breastfeeding women. The recommendation is that they should not use Cordyceps during these periods.
Cordyceps supplements may increase testosterone levels in the body. Until this effect has been clarified, it is advisable for people undergoing testosterone treatment to avoid consuming Cordyceps.
One of the effects of Cordyceps is that it improves the immune system and makes it more active. People diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, such as lupus, multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis, should avoid Cordyceps as it may worsen their condition.
Medication administered after a transplant decreases the activity of the immune system. Since Cordyceps has an immune-boosting effect, avoid taking Cordyceps while undergoing this treatment, as it may decrease the effect of the medication.
Avoid Cordyceps in combination with other anticoagulant medications, as it increases the risk of bruising and bleeding.
Cordyceps increases the risk of bleeding during surgery. Stop taking Cordyceps at least 2 weeks before surgery.
Cordyceps side effects
Based on studies conducted to date, Cordyceps is safe for use by adults at a daily dose of 3-6 grams for a maximum period of 1 year.
Known side effects include intestinal transit disorders (diarrhoea or constipation).
