Juniper(Juniperus communis) is a shrub belonging to the conifer family, whose fruits are used as therapeutic remedies in the form of infusions, essential oils, teas and tinctures.
What are the therapeutic properties of juniper?
Juniper berries contain tannins, flavonoids, anthocyanins (pigments that give the berries their purple colour) and resins.
Juniper berries, when chewed raw, are an excellent remedy for the digestive system and a natural antiseptic for urinary tract infections and respiratory disorders. It can also be used externally for eczema or acne.
Juniper facilitates the elimination of uric acid. The use of juniper berries gives very good results in the treatment of kidney stones (renal calculi).
What is juniper tincture?
This product is obtained from juniper berries and a 340 hydroalcoholic solution. The tincture is recommended for kidney and urinary infections and rheumatic conditions. It is a general detoxifier, helps eliminate uric acid and excess water from the body, and increases diuresis.
It is recommended to take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day, either on its own or diluted in water or tea.
For people with gastric sensitivity, the product should be taken after meals. When taken for longer periods (over 3 weeks), it is recommended to combine juniper tincture with plants that have a protective effect on the renal epithelium: marshmallow, yarrow and chamomile. The treatment should not last more than 6 consecutive weeks.
Although it is a natural extract, it should be administered with caution to pregnant or breastfeeding women.
It is contraindicated in patients with renal insufficiency and intolerance to the product's components.
What are the benefits of juniper tea?
Juniper tea contributes to the proper functioning of the kidneys and bladder, supports healthy digestion and contributes to normal lung function.
It has the following effects: diuretic, sudorific, depurative, disinfectant of the urinary, digestive and respiratory tracts, stomachic (stimulates the secretion of gastrointestinal juices), carminative (helps eliminate intestinal gas).
It is recommended for cystitis, urethritis, urinary lithiasis, renal colic, rheumatism, gout, dyspepsia, bloating and bronchitis.
The infusion is prepared from 1 teaspoon of chopped fruit in a cup of water.
Drink 1-2 cups of tea per day, for no more than 4 weeks, unless advised by a doctor.
What other juniper preparations are available?
Consuming the fruit raw and juniper tinctures is recommended to aid digestion.
Eaten as they are or chewed, the fruits have a calming effect. They are a perfect sedative for coughing fits, strengthen the immune system and have hypoglycaemic properties.
Essential oils of juniper help tone connective tissues, prevent cramps and relax muscles. They are remedies for soothing itching caused by insect bites.
Topical applications of essential oils through gentle massage can combat muscle pain or pain associated with osteoarticular diseases (arthrosis, arthritis, rheumatism).
Concentrated juniper juice is a good tonic for children, for sore throats and colds.
Juniper spirit is used as a rub for rheumatism.
Juniper berries should be consumed on an empty stomach, chewing them slowly and gently so that the substances are gradually absorbed. On the first day, consume 4 juniper berries, on the second day 5, and so on. When you reach 15 berries per day on the 12th day, reduce the dose by one berry, so that on the 23rd day you are back to 4 juniper berries.
The treatment can be followed with juniper berries macerated in honey with lemon. Take one teaspoon in the morning on an empty stomach and half a teaspoon before lunch.
This product can also be prepared by mixing honey with juniper tincture.
