Orbit micro infusion set for insulin pumps

The Orbit micro infusion set is a single-use medical device for the continuous subcutaneous delivery of fluids and medications, such as insulin, via an external infusion pump. It consists of a steel cannula with an adhesive strip and a rotating tubing connector that allows for flexible positioning on the body. The set is non-pyrogenic, sterilized with ethylene oxide, and packaged as a sterile barrier system.

Areas of application

This infusion set is intended for the subcutaneous infusion of medications from an external insulin or infusion pump. It is expressly not suitable for intravenous infusions or the administration of blood and blood products. Its use is governed by a physician's prescription as part of continuous therapy, e.g., insulin pump therapy.

Application and handling

Before inserting the infusion set, choose a suitable insertion site away from the waist, bones, scar tissue, navel, and recently used infusion sites. Clean the skin thoroughly according to your doctor's instructions and remove any excess hair. Using a 70% isopropyl alcohol pad will help the dressing adhere well; the skin must be completely dry before application.

After connecting the tubing to the pump, the tubing is vented according to the pump's priming instructions to remove air from the system. The steel cannula is then inserted into the subcutaneous fat at a 90° angle, the adhesive patch is pressed firmly into place, and the introducer is removed. The tubing cap is audibly (1–2 clicks) attached to the cannula base and checked by twisting. The cannula base must then be primed with medication according to the specified priming volumes to prevent dosing losses.

The set can be temporarily disconnected from the tubing if necessary; before reconnecting, the tubing must be vented again according to the pump instructions and the base septum wiped with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Blood glucose levels should be checked during any interruption and again approximately 2–3 hours after reconnection.

Important information for safe use

Orbit micro infusion sets are for single use only: The cannula must not be reused, reinserted, or re-sterilized, as this can lead to cannula damage, increased risk of infection, skin irritation, and inaccurate medication delivery. The set should remain at the same injection site for a maximum of 48 hours; if itching, redness, inflammation, or unexplained elevated blood glucose levels occur, the site should be changed sooner. The injection site should be checked regularly, the steel cannula must always be fully inserted into the skin, and the adhesive dressing must be securely in place.

The infusion set is designed for connection to continuous subcutaneous infusion pumps and reservoirs with a standard Luer-lock connection. Before each use, carefully read the instructions for use of the infusion set and the pump. Consult with your healthcare provider to establish a backup plan for insulin or medication administration in case the pump or infusion system fails or supplies run out.

Warning notices

Do not use the infusion set if the individual packaging is damaged, has already been opened, or the needle shield is missing, and not after the printed expiration date. Failure to do so increases the risk of infection at the insertion site. If signs of infection occur (e.g., pain, redness, swelling, increased warmth, pus formation), the set should be changed immediately and a doctor's office contacted.

The steel cannula must not be bent or forcibly manipulated, as a broken cannula may remain in the tissue and may require surgical removal. The infusion set must never be filled or a blocked line flushed while the tubing is connected to an existing cannula – this could result in an unintentionally high dose of medication. The product contains phthalates.

Contact with perfume, deodorant, or insect repellents in the area of ​​the infusion set should be avoided, as this can affect the material and adhesion of the patch. The sets should be stored dry, protected from sunlight, and at room temperature.

Disposal

Used infusion sets are considered sharp medical waste. They must be disposed of safely in accordance with your doctor's office's recommendations and applicable government regulations for the disposal of needles and other sharp objects.
