Cascara Sagrada has long been used by Native Americans. The powder created from this bark acts as a powerful laxative and is believed to strengthen the walls of the colon.

It consists of compounds called anthraquinones. These are what act as a laxative in humans because they cause peristalsis (contractions in the intestines and colon). These contractions provide the impetus to activate the intestines. It also contains emodin and aloe-emodin, which coat and strengthen the walls of the digestive system, as well as other non-harmful ingredients that do not have a laxative effect.

Other notable ingredients of Cascara Sagrada are hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides called cascarosides (about 70% of the total are A, B, C and D and other glycosides in small concentrations) with laxative effects.

Other important ingredients include resins, tannins, and lipids, which make up most of the other components of the bark. Along with these properties, Cascara Sagrada is also believed to improve the tone of the muscles of the colon walls.

This herb also stimulates the secretion of minerals and releases lubricating fluids into the colon. These fluids soothe and strengthen the intestinal walls.
