Burdock is a herbaceous plant also known as lipan or Arctium lappa, belonging to the Asteraceae family and native to North Asia and Europe. Its root has been used for centuries in holistic medicine to alleviate a variety of health problems.
What does burdock contain?
Burdock root contains antifungal and antibacterial compounds, while the leaves contain arctiopicrin. Burdock root is rich in magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium salts, volatile oil, popyllinic compounds, antioxidants and fibre.
What are the benefits of burdock?
Among the best known properties and benefits of burdock root are: it is a powerful antioxidant, helps eliminate toxins from the blood, has a strong inhibitory effect on the development of cancer cells, such as pancreatic carcinoma, has a hepatoprotective and aphrodisiac effect, and confers resistance to the mutagenic action of solar radiation.
Burdock has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, helps treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema and topical burns, has a probiotic role, is an adjuvant in kidney disorders with a diuretic and depurative effect, fights hair loss and has a sudorific action.
How is burdock used?
Tea can be made from burdock root, which is available in powder form, as a dietary supplement, decoction and fermented tinctures. One cup of burdock tea per day is recommended as a safe dose for adults.
What are the contraindications for burdock?
Wild burdock root should not be consumed, as the burdock plant resembles the belladonna plant, which grows alongside it and is highly toxic.
As a natural diuretic, it should not be consumed with other diuretics or when the person is dehydrated.
The following categories of people should avoid burdock root: pregnant women or women trying to conceive; people with a history of allergies to plants such as chrysanthemums or daisies; breastfeeding women; people taking diabetes medication or blood thinners; children under 18; people with chronic or life-threatening conditions.
What is burdock tincture?
Burdock tincture contains burdock root extract (Bardanae radix) 30% and ethyl alcohol min. 40%.
It is administered as follows:
For children over 6 years: 15-25 drops diluted in 150 ml of water or tea, 3 times a day, during meals.
For adults: 30-40 drops diluted in 150 ml of water or tea, 3 times a day, during meals. Treatments last 1-3 months, followed by a one-month break.
It is also available in capsule form as a nutritional supplement, to be taken 1 capsule 3 times a day.
