Inulin - benefits
Inulin is an important source of fibre and has many benefits for digestive function. It helps increase the number of good bacteria in the colon by acting as a probiotic. Inulin maintains cardiovascular health by positively influencing serum cholesterol and maintaining optimal triglyceride levels. Inulin supports the intestinal bacterial flora, gives a feeling of satiety and helps combat constipation. Inulin is effective in combating osteoporosis and maintaining bone health as it supports the absorption of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc and phosphorus.
Inulin - contraindications and side effects
When it comes to inulin supplements, such as inulin powder, it is contraindicated to consume more than the recommended dose, as doses above 40 g can cause diarrhoea, stomach discomfort, flatulence, abdominal cramps and bloating.
It is contraindicated to consume dietary supplements containing inulin if you are allergic to pollen, due to the chicory content, which can cause oral allergy syndrome in some people. Chicory is also part of the Asteraceae family of plants, which includes daisies, chamomile, sunflowers, dandelions and dahlias, so if you are allergic to these pollens, do not consume chicory inulin.
In extremely rare cases, an adverse reaction called anaphylaxis may occur, with symptoms including difficulty breathing, wheezing, itching, eczema, swelling and then loss of consciousness.
