Shatavari roots contain a huge amount of flavonoids, natural hormones, vitamins and minerals. Healing agents prepared from the underground part of the plant have a pronounced anti-inflammatory and tonic effect, normalise the endocrine system and replenish the body's nutrient deficiencies.
What is Shatavari?
Shatavari is one of the plants with the greatest rejuvenating potential among those used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Native to India and the Himalayan region, Shatavari belongs to the same family as asparagus and is characterised by the presence of small, uniform spines. It has white flowers and dark purple fruits and is a plant capable of improving reproductive health in both women and men.
Shatavari is used for its tonic and immunomodulatory effects. This plant is an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body improve its resistance to stress.
Shatavari can also be useful for gastric ulcers, hyperacidity and diarrhoea, and may even be suitable in cases of bronchitis and chronic fever. It is believed to restore the balance between body fluids.
Shatavari alleviates problems related to hormonal imbalance, such as polycystic ovary syndrome. It is useful for problems related to the female reproductive system, specifically for mood swings and irritability specific to premenstrual syndrome, for menopausal hot flushes and for stimulating milk production in breastfeeding women. Shatavari slows down the ageing process, increasing longevity, improving the functioning of the immune system and the brain, ensuring vigour and vitality of mind and body. In addition, the plant is recommended for nervous system disorders, dyspepsia, tumours, inflammation, neuropathies and liver disease.
Shatavari is recommended for digestive burns, indigestion, diarrhoea, urinary tract inflammation or irritable bowel syndrome.
Shatavari also has diuretic properties, so the plant is used to eliminate oedema, reduce blood pressure in hypertension and promote expectoration in coughs.
How is Shatavari administered?
It is recommended to take 1-2 capsules twice a day with meals.
It can be used for long periods of time. Treatment with Shatavari is safe for vegans and vegetarians. It does not contain gluten. Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.
What are the contraindications for Shatavari?
The plant is contraindicated in cases of breast cysts, fibrocystic tissue due to oestrogen imbalance, and other problems that should be addressed by a doctor.
Shatavari is not recommended for people with:
- kidney failure;
- fungal infections in the body;
- individual allergies;
- mastopathy due to high estrogen levels;
- insufficient production of digestive enzymes by the stomach and pancreas.
The plant should not be used when sex hormone levels in women are high. In this case, side effects such as weight gain, skin irritation and cycle disturbances may occur.
Is Shatavari only available in capsule form?
Shatavari is also available in tea and powder form.
Shatavari tea is made from churna, a fine dried powder from the roots of a plant. It is prepared as follows:
- 50-100 g of powder is poured into an enamel container;
- A glass of boiling water is poured over the powder;
- It is boiled over medium heat;
- Remove immediately from the stove and cool in a closed container.
The resulting product is filtered through a sieve covered with folded gauze. The tea is consumed on an empty stomach, 80 ml three times a day.
Shatavari powder is administered in the first 2-3 weeks of use of the drug, only 1/2 teaspoon of the extract on an empty stomach, so that the body gets used to the new drug.
The dose is increased to one teaspoon. This amount of the medicine is used for three months. The powder is taken once a day in the morning before breakfast.
For dry skin prone to irritation, a simple remedy can be prepared:
- dilute 5 g of shatavari powder in a small amount of warm milk;
- mix until a semi-liquid paste is obtained;
- massage into the face, neck and décolleté.
Leave the mask on for 15 minutes, then wash off with warm water.
