ACTION AND MECHANISM

- [LAXATIVE]. This medication has a stimulant and lubricating laxative effect, due to the presence of picosulfate and paraffin, respectively. Picosulfate stimulates peristalsis by direct action on the mucosa or on the myenteric plexuses, while paraffin coats the stool with a hydrophobic layer that prevents water loss.

SPECIAL WARNINGS

- The cause of constipation should be diagnosed before treatment, ruling out the possibility of gastrointestinal tract obstructions or appendicitis.
Before starting treatment, the patient must be properly hydrated and have normal electrolyte levels. Treatment should not be started if these levels are abnormal.

SENIORS

Peristalsis stimulants can exacerbate weakness, incoordination, and orthostatic hypotension in geriatric patients, as a result of large electrolyte loss, when used repeatedly.

PATIENT ADVICE

- This medicine should not be used by patients with intestinal obstructions or bedridden patients.
- Continued use may lead to habituation.
- If after 1 week of use, constipation does not improve, persists or worsens, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.
- It is recommended to administer this medication at bedtime, and if a second dose is necessary, in the morning on an empty stomach.
Before starting any treatment for constipation, lifestyle habits should be modified. It is recommended to drink plenty of water daily (more than two liters), consume adequate fiber, respond to the urge to defecate, and exercise.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

INDICATIONS

INTERACTIONS

- Digoxin. Prolonged use of laxatives may increase digoxin toxicity. - Fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K). Digoxin may interfere with vitamin absorption; therefore, it is recommended to separate the administration of these medications by at least 2 hours.

LACTATION

It is unknown whether the components of this medication are excreted in breast milk, so extreme caution is advised.

CHILDREN

The use of laxatives is not recommended in children under 6 years of age, as they could mask more serious conditions. It should be noted that children are especially prone to developing lipid pneumonia.

GUIDELINES FOR PROPER ADMINISTRATION

It is recommended to take this medication at bedtime, and if a second dose is necessary, in the morning on an empty stomach or two hours after breakfast. It is advisable to dilute it in a glass of water and take it while standing upright to avoid inhaling paraffin droplets. Drink plenty of fluids (up to two liters daily) to help soften stools.

POSOLOGY

DOSAGE: - Adults, oral: * Sachets: 1 sachet/24 ​​hours, and if necessary, 1 sachet/12 hours. * Emulsion: 15 ml/24 hours, and if necessary, 15 ml/12 hours. The dose may be gradually reduced when the desired normalization is achieved.

PRECAUTIONS

- Symptoms of appendicitis (nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps). - Electrolyte imbalance. - Dysphagia. - Dependence. Continued use of laxatives can lead to dependence, as they may cause electrolyte imbalances that result in intestinal atony.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

Adverse effects are generally mild and transient. The most common adverse reactions are: - Digestive. After continued use, abdominal pain and nausea may rarely occur, and intestinal atony even exceptionally. Perianal discomfort such as anal itching or irritation and hemorrhoids are very rare (<1%).
