Sterile lubricating gel for catheter and instrument insertion

Endosgel is a sterile lubricating gel containing 0.05% chlorhexidine digluconate that facilitates the insertion of catheters and medical instruments into the urethra and bladder. It is used particularly in endourological procedures, electrocoagulation, resections, diagnostic examinations, cystoscopy, electrocauterization of bleeding, and catheterization for bladder emptying disorders. The gel also possesses supportive disinfectant properties against pathogens that can cause urinary tract infections.

Effects and special features

Endosgel ensures a clear appearance of instrument surfaces and exhibits physiological conductivity (up to approximately 10 mS/cm). The positively charged chlorhexidine digluconate penetrates the cell wall of microorganisms, altering their surface properties and disrupting the osmotic balance. This leads to the destruction of the microorganism cell wall and imparts supportive disinfectant properties to the gel in the urinary tract.

Application

Endosgel is slowly instilled into the urethra after routine cleaning and disinfection of the skin or mucous membranes in the genital area and at the external urethral orifice. The entire urethra, including the external sphincter, should be coated with a lubricating film to facilitate the gentle insertion of catheters and instruments. Before use, the syringe plunger should be gently depressed to release any pressure point, and then the cap should be removed without touching the syringe cone. To ensure full effectiveness, wait 5–10 minutes after instillation.

Use by professionals and age groups

Endosgel is used in adults, adolescents, and children aged 2 years and older. For intermittent (self-)catheterization, the gel should generally be applied by a healthcare professional; users who need to self-catheterize must first be instructed by a doctor in its use and dosage. For children, the doctor will determine the appropriate dosage. Endosgel must not be used in children under 2 years of age.
