Description

Eupirin Cardio is a drug in the form of enteric-coated tablets containing acetylsalicylic acid, which inhibits platelet aggregation. The drug is intended for long-term, prophylactic use in conditions at risk of blood clots and embolisms.

Composition

The active substance of the drug is acetylsalicylic acid ( Acidum acetylsalicylicum ).

One enteric-coated tablet contains 75 mg of acetylsalicylic acid ( Acidum acetylsalicylicum ).

Excipients: Tablet core: microcrystalline cellulose; cellulose powder; pregelatinized starch; stearic acid. Subcoating: hypromellose; lactose monohydrate; macrogol 3350; triacetin. Enteric coating: methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer type A; talc; triethyl citrate; sodium bicarbonate; colloidal anhydrous silica; sodium lauryl sulfate.

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Consult your doctor before taking Polocard.

The following dosage is usually recommended:
1 or 2 tablets (75 mg) daily.

This medicine should be taken orally, preferably with or after a meal, with a small amount of water. The lowest effective doses should be used to reduce the risk of side effects.

In case of a recent heart attack or suspected recent heart attack: 4 gastro-resistant tablets (300 mg) taken at a time. Chew the tablets very carefully to accelerate absorption.

Action

Acetylsalicylic acid inhibits platelet aggregation (clumping).

Indications

Eupirin Cardio should be used: to prevent heart attack in high-risk individuals; to prevent a repeat heart attack; in case of a recent heart attack or suspected recent heart attack; in unstable angina; after surgical or interventional vascular procedures, e.g. coronary artery bypass grafting, coronary angioplasty; to prevent transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke and after their occurrence; in individuals with peripheral arterial occlusive disease; to prevent coronary thrombosis in patients with multiple risk factors; to prevent venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in long-term immobilized patients.

Contraindications

You should not use this medicine if you: are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid, other salicylates or any of the other ingredients of this medicine; have a bleeding diathesis; have an active stomach and/or duodenal ulcer; have severe renal failure; have severe liver failure; have severe heart failure; have a history of attacks of so-called aspirin asthma caused by the administration of salicylates or substances with a similar effect, especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; are taking methotrexate concomitantly in doses of 15 mg per week or higher; are in the last trimester of pregnancy; are a child under 12 years of age and are suffering from viral infections due to the risk of Reye's syndrome.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Adverse reactions occurring:

Common (affects 1 to 10 users in 100): indigestion symptoms (heartburn, nausea, vomiting) and abdominal pain.

Rare (affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000): inflammation of the stomach and intestines, stomach and/or duodenal ulcer; transient liver function disorders.

Rare or very rare: severe bleeding such as: gastrointestinal bleeding (symptoms: black stools), cerebral bleeding (especially in patients with uncontrolled hypertension and/or during concomitant administration of anti-bleeding drugs).
Hemorrhage may lead to acute or chronic anemia due to blood loss and/or iron deficiency anemia (symptoms: weakness, paleness).

Very rare (affecting less than 1 in 10,000 people): severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock (symptoms: swelling of the face, eyelids, tongue and larynx, significant drop in blood pressure and disturbances of heart rhythm and breathing); impaired kidney function; decreased blood glucose levels.

Additionally, the following have been reported: dizziness and tinnitus (symptoms of overdose); hypersensitivity reactions: rash, hives, swelling, itching, cardiac and respiratory disorders (including asthma); - increased risk of bleeding, prolonged bleeding time; perioperative hemorrhage, hematomas, bleeding (nosebleed, genitourinary tract bleeding, gum bleeding). If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings and precautions

Caution should be exercised especially in patients: who are allergic to anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic drugs; who suffer from asthma, chronic respiratory diseases; who have nasal polyps; who have had gastric and intestinal ulcers; who have renal and/or hepatic impairment; who are taking oral antidiabetic drugs from the sulfonylurea group; who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and/or systemic lupus erythematosus and have hepatic impairment; who have metrorrhagia, excessive menstrual bleeding, who are using an intrauterine contraceptive device, who suffer from arterial hypertension, heart failure; who have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency; in the first and second trimester of pregnancy; during breastfeeding; and who are also taking metamizole, as it may reduce the inhibitory effect of acetylsalicylic acid on platelet aggregation.

In case of planned surgery (also before minor procedures, e.g. tooth extraction), especially ophthalmological and otological ones, Eupirin Cardio should not be used for at least 5 days before the procedure.

The medicine should be stored out of the sight and reach of children, at a temperature below 25ºC.

Use of other medications

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you are taking, have recently taken or are planning to take, including those obtained without a prescription.

This information is particularly important if you are taking: other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including salicylates; ibuprofen; anticoagulants (heparin, coumarin derivatives); medicines used for gout (e.g. probenecid, benzbromarone); oral antidiabetic medicines (e.g. tolbutamide, glibenclamide) and insulin; medicines that inhibit platelet aggregation (e.g. ticlopidine); medicines used to treat depression and anxiety (e.g. fluoxetine, paroxetine); diuretics (e.g. furosemide); systemic glucocorticosteroids; antihypertensive medicines (e.g. enalapril, captopril); valproic acid (an antiepileptic medicine); methotrexate in doses less than 15 mg per week; digoxin (a heart medicine); thrombolytic medicines (e.g. streptokinase and alteplase). metamizole; acetazolamide.

Taking the medicine with food and drink

Enteric-coated tablets should be taken during or after a meal, swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of water (half a glass).

Alcohol should not be consumed during treatment with acetylsalicylic acid due to the increased risk of damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Acetylsalicylic acid can be used if necessary in the first and second trimester of pregnancy, but the decision on its use is made by a doctor.

Use of the drug in children and adolescents

Not to be used in children and adolescents under 16 years of age.
