Description

Legalon 140 is a medicinal product in the form of hard capsules containing dry extract of milk thistle fruit ( Silybi mariani fructus extractum siccum ). The silymarin found in milk thistle is used as an adjunct in chronic liver inflammation and cirrhosis. Legalon 140 is suitable for children over 12 years of age and adults.

Composition

The active substance is a dry extract of milk thistle fruit ( Silybi mariani fructus extractum siccum ).
Extractant: ethyl acetate (98% V/V).

One hard capsule contains 173.0 - 186.7 mg of milk thistle fruit dry extract (standardized extract 36-44:1) which corresponds to 58.0 - 62.5% of silymarin calculated as silibinin.

Excipients: microcrystalline cellulose, corn starch, sodium carboxymethyl starch (type A), sodium lauryl sulfate, magnesium stearate. Coating: red iron oxide (E 172), black iron oxide (E 172), titanium dioxide (E 171), gelatin, sodium lauryl sulfate.

Dosage

Always use this medicine exactly as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you have any further questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

• For oral use. Capsules should be swallowed whole with a small amount of liquid before a meal.
• For prolonged symptoms, consult a doctor. The duration of therapy should be determined by the doctor.

Adults and children over 12 years: Initially, 1 capsule 3 times a day (equivalent to 420 mg of silymarin).
The maintenance dose is 1 capsule 2 times a day (equivalent to 280 mg of silymarin).

Action

The active ingredient in Legalon 140 is a complex of flavonols called silymarin, which is found in milk thistle fruit and contains, among other things, silibinin. Silymarin is used to treat liver diseases.

Indications

• treatment of conditions following toxic liver damage;
• as an aid in patients suffering from chronic inflammatory liver diseases and liver cirrhosis.

Contraindications

When not to use Legalon 140 :

• allergy to the active substances found in milk thistle and/or other plants of the Asteraceae family, or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Rare side effects (affects 1 to 10 people in 10,000):
• stomach and intestinal disorders,
• loose stool.

Very rare side effects (affecting 1 in 10,000 people):
• hypersensitivity reactions,
• shortness of breath,
• rash.

Warnings and precautions

• The drug should not be used to treat acute poisoning.
• If symptoms of jaundice occur (light to dark yellow discoloration of the skin, yellow discoloration of the whites of the eyes), consult a doctor.
• During treatment, factors harmful to the liver should be avoided.

Storage:

• Store the medicine at a temperature below 25°C.
• Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Taking the medicine with food and drink

The capsules should be taken before eating.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

The drug should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to the lack of appropriate studies available on the use of the drug.

Use of the drug in children and adolescents

Do not use Legalon 140 in children under 12 years of age.
