Melatonin is a natural hormone, also called the "sleep hormone", which is produced by the pineal gland located in the brain. Our body is programmed to start producing melatonin in response to the visual receptors, immediately after it gets dark. However, although the sleep hormone is secreted throughout the night, the maximum level is only reached in the morning.
With the first rays of the sun, the level of melatonin begins to drop drastically, the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) will resume its course the following evening.
