Cinnamon is one of the few spices that can be eaten directly.
Medicinal uses of cinnamon
Cinnamon reduces blood clotting - Cinnamaldehyde has been studied in detail in the area of action on platelets. The mechanism of the anti-aggregation effect of cinnamaldehyde consists in inhibiting the formation of arachidonic acid in blood platelet membranes. The reduced production of arachidonic acid contributes to the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokine production - thromboxane A2 and to the reduction of aggregation - blood coagulation. The mentioned anticoagulant effect of cinnamaldehyde overlaps pharmacologically and is related to the anti-inflammatory effect. The effects of cinnamaldehyde can be compared to the effects of acetylsalicylic acid known as Acylpyrine or Aspirin.
