What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a chemical compound belonging to carotenoids, i.e. pigments found naturally in plants. It is a metabolite of zeaxanthin and astaxanthin. It can be produced by some species of algae, yeasts and bacteria. The main natural source is the green algae Haematococcus pluvialis, and the astaxanthin enclosed in capsules by the American company Now Foods is obtained from the extract of this algae. Taking advantage of the fact that astaxatin dissolves in fats, the capsules have an oil filling from Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

The recommended serving size of the Astaxanthin 10 mg Now ^® supplement is 1 capsule every other day. A pack of 60 vegetable softgels provides four months of supplementation.
