Detection and treatment of head lice

Head lice are tiny parasites that thrive on human heads. Adults reach the size of a sesame seed and shimmer in shades of gray to brown. The young larvae are still developing but nonetheless unpleasant. Lice eggs, known as nits, appear white to brownish, are the size of a grain of sand, and are distinctly oval-shaped. Unlike loose dandruff, nits adhere firmly to the hair. Once they are more than one centimeter from the scalp, it is extremely unlikely that any larvae will hatch from them.

Treatment methods

After a head lice infestation has been diagnosed, it is advisable to use a suitable head lice treatment immediately. To ensure that no re-infestation occurs, all affected individuals should be treated on the same day.

Application tips

• Start by thoroughly brushing your hair and removing any knots.
• The hair should be regularly parted and divided into smaller sections.
• Hold the comb at a slight angle to the scalp to better detect and remove lice and nits.
• Work your way through the hair strand by strand, pulling the comb from the roots to the tips.
• After each pass, examine the comb for lice or larvae and remove them with a paper towel if necessary.
