Orfiril long is a medicine used to treat epileptic seizures (antiepileptic medicine) and mania.

Orfiril long is indicated in the treatment of:
- epilepsy;
- mania, which can make you feel very excited, euphoric, agitated, enthusiastic or hyperactive.
Mania occurs in a condition called “bipolar disorder.” Orfiril long can be given when lithium cannot be used.

Do not use Orfiril long:
- if you are allergic to sodium valproate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Orfiril long.

Pregnancy, lactation and fertility:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine.
Breastfeeding:
A small amount of sodium valproate passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor about whether you should breastfeed your baby.
Fertility:
Orfiril Long may reduce your fertility. On the other hand, single reports have shown that this effect is reversible after discontinuation of the drug.

Driving and using machines:
During treatment with sodium valproate, reaction time may be delayed, an effect potentiated by alcohol consumption. This should be taken into account when driving or using machines.
Avoid driving, using machinery or other dangerous activities during or at least for the first few days of treatment. This decision will be made by your doctor, depending on the patient's response to treatment and the dose used.

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Treatment with Orfiril long should be initiated and supervised by a physician experienced in the treatment of epilepsy or bipolar disorder.
Food has no influence on the absorption of valproate, so Orfiril long can be administered independently of mealtimes.
Orfiril long is administered orally, with a sufficient amount of liquid, usually in 1-2 doses.
