This small creeping shrub, about 15 cm tall, develops delicate white or pink flowers at the base of the leaves. The evergreen, finely serrated leaves are grouped at the ends of thin, rigid stems. Wintergreen, also known as gaultheria, grows in moist woodland environments, on acidic, sandy soil, and produces vibrant red berries from October to March.
