ACTION AND MECHANISM

Anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective. A steroid derivative related to glycyrrhizinic acid (licorice). It works by stimulating mucus synthesis in the mucous membranes. In contact with the oral mucosa for several hours, it forms a protective film that accelerates the healing process. Carbenoxolone also has detergent and antimicrobial properties.

PATIENT ADVICE

- This medicine is for oral use only.

- Apply a thin layer on the area to be treated.

- When the ointment comes into contact with saliva it turns into a gel.

- It is recommended to wash the cannula after each application.

- If symptoms worsen or persist after 7 days of treatment, the clinical situation should be re-evaluated.

- It should not be administered together with corticosteroids for oral application.

PHARMACOKINETICS

- Minimally absorbed when administered orally. Rinsing with 2 g of carbenoxolone dissolved in 30 ml of water three times daily produced serum concentrations between 0.1 and 2 mcg/ml (maximum 5 mcg/ml). - No significant changes were detected in sodium and potassium concentrations or blood pressure.

INDICATIONS

- [ORAL ULCERS]: Symptomatic relief of small canker sores or mouth ulcers (less than 1 cm).

RULES FOR CORRECT ADMINISTRATION

Apply a thin layer to the area to be treated. The container comes with a nozzle for easy application.

POSOLOGY

- Topical oral: Adults and children over 12 years: 1 application to the area to be treated, 4 times a day. Children under 12 years: Not recommended.

PRECAUTIONS RELATED TO EXCIPIENTS

- This medicine contains propylene glycol, which may cause skin irritation.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

The adverse effects of carbenoxolone are generally mild and transient. The most characteristic adverse reactions are: - Exceptionally (<<1%): if ingested, or used in prolonged treatments, in elderly patients or in patients with cardiovascular, renal or hepatic disease, it may cause [EDEMA] and sodium, with [ARTERIAL HYPERTENSION] and [HYPOKALAEMIA].
