Description
The Ferritin Self-Test is a rapid, diagnostic test for the qualitative detection of ferritin, a protein responsible for storage in the body. The test is performed at home using a fingertip capillary blood sample, and results are available in just 5 minutes —no need for a visit to a laboratory. The test can be performed at any time of day and is over 95% accurate . It helps provide a preliminary determination of whether ferritin levels are below normal.
Why is it worth testing your ferritin levels?
Ferritin is one of the key indicators of the body's iron metabolism. Too low a level may indicate – one of the main causes of anemia – and may be associated with the occurrence of symptoms such as:
- constant fatigue and drowsiness;
- faster heartbeat or shortness of breath during physical exertion;
- pale skin;
- feeling cold;
- headaches, dizziness;
- problems with concentration;
- weakening of hair and nails.
Iron deficiency is common in menstruating women, pregnant women, vegetarians, athletes, and people with chronic diseases or iron absorption disorders.
When is it worth taking the test?
It is worth doing a ferritin test when:
- there are symptoms suggestive of anemia (fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness);
- menstrual periods are heavy or there is bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract;
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding;
- there is rapid growth or development during puberty;
- you follow a diet low in iron (e.g. vegetarian);
- you suffer from loss of appetite and drowsiness;
- you suffer from chronic diseases that may affect iron absorption.
The test can be performed at any time of day, but it should not be performed if you have an illness, acute inflammation, or damage to your spleen or liver. Abnormal results can occur even in the absence of iron deficiency.
How does the test work?
The Self-Test cassette test uses lateral flow chromatography technology to detect ferritin levels in blood. If the ferritin level is above the cutoff value of 30 ng/ml, a colored line appears in the test line region (T). If the ferritin concentration is less than 30 ng/ml, the test line does not appear.
Thanks to the test, you can react quickly and consult a doctor before iron deficiency begins to affect your daily functioning.
