The intestines need food too!
The large intestine, at approximately 1.5 meters in length, is relatively short compared to the small intestine, but no less important for that. It plays a crucial role as the collection and excretion organ for metabolic waste products during digestion. Both the small and large intestines are populated by a multitude of bacteria. In total, over 1,000 different bacterial species support digestion and provide natural protection against harmful substances. Like all living organisms, gut bacteria need nutrients to survive, reproduce, and function properly. They obtain these nutrients from the food we consume. However, not all foods are readily available; fiber-rich foods are particularly important.
Dietary fiber serves as a nutrient base for intestinal bacteria:
Dietary fiber consists primarily of carbohydrates. When we hear "carbohydrates," we immediately think of pasta and quick energy sources, which the media often warns against as fattening. However, this only includes carbohydrates that are broken down into their individual sugars, such as glucose and fructose, during digestion. With dietary fiber, the individual components are so tightly bound together that they are not broken down and absorbed in the small intestine. Instead, they are fermented by bacteria in the large intestine and used as nutrients.
Short-chain fatty acids are produced through the fermentation of dietary fiber:
Microbial fermentation by gut bacteria produces short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate (butyric acid), propionate (propionic acid), and acetate (acetic acid). These fatty acids can have a positive effect on the gut microbiome. Therefore, this type of carbohydrate supports the gut and its physiological function as a digestive and immune organ.
Biotin contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and the maintenance of normal mucous membranes. Niacin and riboflavin contribute to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes. Niacin contributes to the maintenance of normal psychological function.
