Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and is essential for tooth development, normal muscle cell function and the osteoarticular system, as well as helping to regulate heart rhythm. Calcium deficiency manifests itself in fainting, heart rhythm disorders, menstrual cycle irregularities and spasmophilia. Calcium is found in various formulas in combination with magnesium and vitamin D3, as these are essential for the absorption of calcium from food and its fixation in the bones. Without them, our musculoskeletal system cannot function properly.

How is calcium administered?

Adults

Tablets (Calcium Magnesium with Vitamin D3): 1 tablet/day, after meals.

Chewable tablets (Calcium Sandoz Osteo):

  • Adults and elderly: 1 chewable tablet/day;
  • Pregnant women: ½ chewable tablet/day.

Capsules:

  • Calcium Complex Bone Formula Natures Way: 3 capsules twice/day with meals.
  • Calcium Citrate Nature's Way: 2 capsules twice/day;
  • Coral calcium: 1-2 capsules/day;

Effervescent tablets (Calcium with Vitamin D3): 1 effervescent tablet/day dissolved in a glass of water (200 ml) twice/day.

Tablets (Calcium Magnesium): 1 tablet per day.

Children

Syrup (Calcium With Magnesium for children):

  • Children 6-12 months: 1 teaspoon per day;
  • Children 1-3 years: 2 teaspoons per day;
  • Children 4-8 years: 1 tablespoon per day;
  • Children 9-12 years: 2 tablespoons per day.

Tablets (Calcium Magnesium with vitamin D3): children >6 years, 1 tablet per day, after meals.

In what form is Calcium available?

Calcium is available in the form of tablets, effervescent tablets, capsules and syrup for children.

Are there any precautions for using Calcium?

Before using calcium, consult your doctor or pharmacist if your blood calcium levels, urine calcium levels and kidney function need to be monitored regularly. This is especially important if you are prone to kidney stones, if you are taking thiazide diuretics (water tablets) for heart problems, or if you have kidney disease.

How long should Calcium be taken?

Calcium should be taken as a long-term treatment. Ask your doctor how long you should continue treatment.

Is Calcium safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, suspect you may be pregnant or intend to become pregnant, consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

Can Calcium interact with other medicines or alcohol?

If you are taking any other medicines, consult your doctor before starting to use this medicine. It may interact with medicines such as: bisphosphonates, tetracyclines, thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, barbiturates. Alcohol is not recommended when taking this medicine.

Calcium overdose?

Contact your doctor if you have taken more Calcium than you should have.

Overdose may cause hypercalcaemia and hypervitaminosis. Symptoms of hypercalcaemia may include: thirst, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, arrhythmias.

Are there any side effects associated with the use of Calcium?

This medicine may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking it and see a doctor immediately if you experience: swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat with difficulty breathing and severe skin rash, headache, nausea or vomiting.

Can Calcium cause allergic reactions?

If you are allergic to vitamin D3, calcium or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Are there any contraindications to the use of Calcium?

Do not use Calcium if you are allergic to calcium, vitamin D3 or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, have high levels of calcium in your blood or urine, kidney stones or excess vitamin D in your blood.
