Lutein is basically a carotenoid, a pigment found in plant products, and is one of the carotenoids essential to the body, along with beta-carotene, alpha-carotene (vitamin A) and zeaxanthin. It is also called the ‘eye vitamin’ because of its benefits for maintaining healthy vision. Along with zeaxanthin, Lutein is found in the retina, where it has a powerful antioxidant effect, providing protection against solar radiation and blue light.
Even though it is essential for the human body, Lutein cannot be synthesised in the body, but must be obtained through diet from plant products or through a dietary supplement so that the body can benefit from an optimal amount of Lutein.
