Description Papaya
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
The fruit of the Carica papaya tree, known as papaya, tree melon, lechoza or mamao, originates from southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America and is now cultivated in most tropical countries. Papaya contains an enzyme called papain, which is a protease useful in tenderising meat and other products. Used in South America for thousands of years to break down tough meat fibres, papain is included in commercial meat tenderisers and marketed in tablet form as a remedy for digestive problems.
It is found in various forms such as candied papaya, papaya tea, papaya tablets for digestive problems, or dehydrated papaya.
What are the nutritional values of papaya?
One small papaya (152 grams) contains:
- Calories: approximately 60
- Carbohydrates: 15 grams
- Fibre: 3 grams
- Protein: 1 gram
- Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Folate (vitamin B9), Potassium, Traces of calcium, magnesium and vitamins B1, B3, B5, E and K. It also contains healthy antioxidants known as carotenoids, especially lycopene.
What are the benefits of papaya?
- Papaya is a rich source of antioxidants, including carotenoids, which can neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. The lycopene found in papaya is responsible for this antioxidant effect.
- Eating papaya can improve heart health by supporting cardiovascular health. Fruits rich in lycopene and vitamin C can help prevent heart disease. The antioxidants in papaya can protect the heart and enhance the protective effects of good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol).
- Papaya can reduce inflammation, which is the basis of many diseases. Studies show that fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, such as papaya, help reduce inflammatory markers.
- The papain enzyme in papaya can improve protein digestion, which may be beneficial for those with constipation and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
- Eating papaya may also protect and regenerate the skin. The vitamin C and lycopene in papaya protect the skin from excessive free radical activity, which is responsible for many signs of ageing such as wrinkles and loss of skin firmness and tone.
What are the potential side effects of eating papaya?
Papaya is generally considered safe for human consumption and is well tolerated by most people. However, there may be some side effects from eating papaya in certain circumstances or if consumed in large quantities.
Some people may have an allergic reaction to papaya, especially if they are allergic to latex or certain fruits and vegetables, such as kiwi, bananas or avocados. Allergic reactions to papaya may include itching, swelling, redness or difficulty breathing. If you have a known allergy to papaya or any other food, avoid consuming papaya.
Papaya also contains digestive enzymes, such as papain, which can cause irritation of the digestive tract or even diarrhoea if consumed in excess. People with health problems such as irritable bowel syndrome or other gastrointestinal conditions may have an increased sensitivity to papaya and should consume it with caution.
Are there any contraindications for papaya?
Papaya is generally considered safe for most people, except in cases where individuals are allergic to similar fruits or vegetables.
Papaya also contains enzymes that may interact with certain medications, such as anticoagulants and other drugs that affect blood clotting.
Pregnant women should also consume papaya in moderation as it can cause uterine contractions and miscarriage in some cases.
In general, it is important for people undergoing medical treatment or suffering from health conditions to consult their doctor before starting to consume papaya or any other dietary supplement.
