Basic principles of healthy digestion: what helps keep your stomach healthy
Description Psyllium
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Psyllium is a bran product that can be beneficial for digestive health, natural detoxification, or weight loss. Psyllium fibres pass through the digestive system without being completely absorbed or digested. After absorbing water, these fibres transform and become a compound that has beneficial effects for people suffering from diarrhoea, high blood sugar or constipation, as well as for those with cholesterol or weight problems. Consuming Psyllium seeds also has beneficial effects for people with blood pressure problems.
What is Psyllium?
The name ‘Psyllium’ refers to several plants belonging to the Plantago genus. These plants are generally found in their area of origin – Southeast Asia, but are most commonly found in India. Each of these plants produces approximately 15,000 seeds, covered with gel, from which Psyllium husks are then obtained. Researchers have found that Psyllium seeds contain 30% insoluble fibre and 70% soluble fibre. The fibre obtained from these seeds is very difficult to ferment, so it does not cause bloating, cramps or stomach pain.
What are the benefits of Psyllium seeds?
Psyllium seeds are consumed as a dietary supplement, most often in the form of bran. The health benefits are numerous and the body tolerates these fibres more easily.
Relieves constipation
Psyllium bran increases stool volume, making it useful in relieving constipation.
They help absorb water, ‘bind’ partially digested food, and increase the moisture content of the stool.
Treats diarrhoea
This beneficial effect is due to water absorption and increased stool volume, thus slowing its passage through the colon. Psyllium seeds reduce the number of bowel movements and increase stomach emptying time.
Maintains normal blood sugar levels
Psyllium seeds are useful in reducing blood sugar and insulin levels. Because they form a gel, food digestion can be slowed down, regulating blood sugar levels.
Helps maintain optimal body weight
These fibres form viscous compounds that can control appetite and help you lose extra pounds. By delaying stomach emptying, the feeling of fullness is prolonged for about six hours after consumption.
Reduces cholesterol
Bile acids and fats bind together and are eliminated more easily when you consume Psyllium husks. It increases bile acid synthesis, lowers cholesterol levels and increases good cholesterol levels.
Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
Soluble Psyllium fibre can reduce triglyceride levels, which helps lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. It also helps reduce high blood pressure.
They have prebiotic effects
Because they ferment more slowly, Psyllium seeds do not cause gas or digestive problems.
What recipes can we make with Psyllium seeds?
Oatmeal with Psyllium: put the oatmeal and Psyllium husks in a bowl, add cinnamon and coconut milk. Heat the mixture in the microwave for up to one minute, then add coconut milk to moisten and it is ready to eat after two minutes.
Peanut butter and Psyllium smoothie: blend a frozen banana, two teaspoons of cocoa, two cups of water, one cup of peanut butter, one cup of Psyllium husks and one cup of honey. Finally, add vanilla essence and ice.
