Senna is known for its laxative properties and is often used to treat constipation or to empty the bowels for certain medical procedures.
Forms of release
Senna-based products are available in several forms:
- Senna capsules;
- Senna tea;
- Senna powder.
Senna capsules contain standardised Senna extract (Cassia angustifolia) in various concentrations. Senna teas are made from the dried plant.
Indications
Senna is recommended for treating acute constipation. It can also be used to prepare and empty the bowels before surgery or various medical procedures.
The active ingredients in Senna are called sennosides. They work by increasing muscle contractions in the large intestine, which accelerates transit or bowel movements. This effect stimulates peristalsis, the natural movement of the intestine that pushes the contents towards the rectum and promotes the elimination of faeces. Senna also promotes water retention in the large intestine, which makes stools softer and easier to pass. Another way Senna works is by irritating the nerves in the intestinal walls, leading to increased fluid secretion and inducing muscle contractions, which help eliminate faeces.
Dosage and administration
Senna doses may vary depending on the specific product and form of use (capsules, powder, tea). It is important to follow the instructions on the packaging or your doctor's advice.
Capsules are usually taken 1 capsule per day with sufficient water – usually in the evening before bedtime, as the laxative effect occurs within 8-10 hours. Senna tea should be consumed 1-2 cups per day.
How long should Senna be taken: Senna tea can be consumed as needed for 10 days, followed by a 10-day break. Senna capsules should only be taken once a day, as needed. It is recommended to take them for no longer than 7 days. If the problem persists, consult your doctor to identify the exact cause.
Contraindications
Senna is contraindicated in case of allergy or hypersensitivity to the ingredients. It should also not be used in case of intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, intestinal inflammation or colon diseases.
Interactions with other medicines and foods
Senna may interact with certain medications, such as diuretics, cardiotonics, and corticosteroids. Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking.
Side effects

Overdose
