How to recognize Gardnerella vaginalis infection?

Gardnerella vaginalis is a type of Gram-variable anaerobic bacteria and one of the most common causes of intimate infections affecting women and sometimes men. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is primarily characterized by heavy, foul-smelling vaginal discharge. It occurs as a result of the disruption of the normal vaginal microflora due to, among others: decreased immunity or the use of antibiotic therapy. Bacterial vaginosis can also be transmitted through sexual contact.

Gardnerella vaginalis is responsible for the most common genital and urinary tract infections in women and men, with men being the carriers in most cases.
