Tamanu oil is a popular plant oil in cosmetics.
The tamanu tree, which blooms twice a year, grows on the beaches of French Polynesia and in the Indo-Pacific region. The fruit tastes like an apple and contains a seed. The oil is cold-pressed. This is how tamanu oil, also known as kamani, is obtained. It takes approximately 20 kilograms of fruit to produce 1 kilogram of tamanu oil, which is why the oil is so precious.
The oil is greasy, has an intense aromatic fragrance, and a dark, brownish-green color. Its composition includes a complex of unsaturated fatty acids: 49% oleic acid, 21% linoleic acid, 15% palmitic acid, and 12% stearic acid. Tamanu oil also contains many other nourishing substances, including coumarin, sterols, glycolipids, phospholipids, and resins.
