Boron

Boron is available in easy-to-take capsules or film-coated tablets. For example, NOW Foods' Boron product contains 3 mg capsules of boron in the form of Bororganic Glycine (Albion™) – a chelated form with increased bioavailability. 

Most products do not contain common allergens such as gluten, dairy, eggs, or soy and are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Boron supplements are indicated in the following situations:

• Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis or bone loss;
• Supporting hormonal function, especially in menopausal women and men with low testosterone levels;
• Improvement of cognitive function and memory;
• Supporting vitamin D and calcium metabolism; 
• Enzyme regulation and reduction of chronic inflammation;
• Combating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and hormonal infertility;
• Support for muscle mass and physical strength in the context of sports training or sarcopenia.

The usual recommended dose is 1 capsule per day, taken with food to ensure optimal absorption. This dosage regimen is considered safe and effective for most healthy adults. 

In the case of chronic conditions or other specific indications, the dosage should be individualized by a doctor.

Boron capsules are contraindicated in the following situations:

• Known hypersensitivity to boron or the product's excipients
• People with estrogen-dependent hormonal disorders, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids

Long-term use of this supplement without medical supervision is not recommended. 

In patients with kidney or liver disease, supplementation should be evaluated by a doctor to consider the potential risks.

At usual doses, boron is well tolerated. However, in isolated cases, adverse reactions such as the following may occur:

• Stomach discomfort (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain);
• Skin irritation;
• Headache, restlessness, or insomnia;
• At high doses, systemic toxicity may occur, manifested by fatigue, tremors, liver or kidney disorders.

Boron may interact with certain medications such as estrogens—it may potentiate their effect, requiring careful monitoring in the case of hormone therapy.

It is advisable to inform your doctor about any other treatments for chronic diseases you are taking to avoid possible interactions.

Doses above 20 mg/day can become toxic. Symptoms of overdose include:

• Severe gastrointestinal disorders (vomiting, persistent diarrhea);
• Tremors, muscle weakness;
• Liver and kidney abnormalities;
• Mood changes (anxiety, confusion);

In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

Boron should be stored in a dry, cool place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. After opening, it is recommended to keep the bottle tightly closed. Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the package.
