Lithoren

Lithoren contains 25 mEq (975 mg/sachet) of tribasic potassium citrate, 5 mEq (60 mg/sachet) of tribasic magnesium citrate and 25 mg/sachet of pyridoxine (vitamin B6). Lithoren contains sucralose and can be administered to diabetic patients. Lithoren does not contain sodium chloride.

Lithoren contains citrates and potassium or magnesium ions, substances that prevent urinary supersaturation with calcium oxalate and prevent oxalate or phosphate crystals from adhering to existing stones, preventing them from growing in size. Lithoren solubilises and softens calcium oxalate or uric acid stones.

Lithoren maintains the urinary pH at optimal levels (normal limits pH 6.2–6.8) and prevents the recurrence of urolithiasis and the formation of various types of kidney stones (calcium oxalate or phosphate, uric acid) in people prone to this condition.

Lithoren promotes the complete elimination of residual stone fragments resulting from lithotripsy procedures (kidney stone breaking).

Lithoren solubilises urinary kidney stones and prevents them from growing in size. Lithoren thus prevents and alleviates the typical symptoms of renal colic: acute spastic pain in the back, inability to urinate, pain and burning during urination.

Lithoren sachets can be administered to dissolve stones before lithotripsy procedures, 1 sachet/day or 2 sachets/day throughout the lithotripsy sessions, for a minimum of 3 months. To prevent recurrence, Lithoren is administered one sachet in the evening for 3 consecutive months, with monthly urine pH checks, in 2 courses per year.

The contents of each sachet should be dissolved in 150 ml of water to obtain a clear, orange-coloured solution with a pleasant orange flavour. The box also contains 14 strips for measuring urinary pH and adjusting the dose required for treatment.

Lihoren in sachet form is a dietary food for special medical purposes, recommended mainly for adults. On the recommendation of a specialist doctor, Lithoren can be administered to children and adolescents, but with the dose adjusted according to body weight.

Lithoren should not be administered during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless the risk-benefit ratio has been strictly assessed by your doctor. There are no clear contraindications or studies showing that Lithiren can cause adverse effects on the foetus or mother.

Lithoren is contraindicated in people who are allergic to any of the active ingredients or components of this medicine. Lithoren is not recommended for patients with hyperkalaemia, heart failure, kidney failure, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, or acute dehydration (due to episodes of acute diarrhoea or excessive sweating).

Like all medicines, Lithoren can cause side effects. Stop taking Lithoren and contact your doctor if you experience severe, unbearable lower back pain, blood in your urine or an inability to urinate during treatment with Lithoren.

Some people may experience gastrointestinal disorders, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. These symptoms may be alleviated by taking the product with meals or by reducing the dose.

Lihoren should not be taken at the same time as potassium-sparing diuretics.
