The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.co.uk team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Glycine is a non-essential amino acid and is one of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids. Glycine has only one hydrogen atom and is the simplest stable amino acid. It is part of the structure of proteins and is the most abundant amino acid in collagen.
When was glycine first discovered?
The amino acid glycine was first discovered by French chemist Henri Braconnot in 1820 by boiling gelatin.
In which foods is glycine found?
Glycine has been widely used in the food industry as a flavouring agent, due to its slightly sweet taste and its preservative properties.
As a non-essential amino acid, it is found in various foods such as chicken, turkey, pork, sesame seed flour, protein powders, gelatin desserts, peanuts, nuts, shellfish, fish, almonds, cheese, soy, eggs, and beans.
Essential amino acids are amino acids that are obtained only from food and cannot be synthesised by the body, while non-essential amino acids are synthesised in the body.
What are amino acids?
Amino acids are like building blocks that, when put together, form proteins. Proteins are the main source of muscle structure.
What roles can glycine play in the human body?
Glycine is an important amino acid in the human body and has numerous properties:
- It helps synthesise glutathione, an important neurotransmitter.
- It has a proteinogenic role, i.e. it helps synthesise proteins.
- It is a precursor of creatine, uric acid and porphyrins.
- It helps form haem, an important component of haemoglobin (the main oxygen carrier in red blood cells, also called erythrocytes);
- It participates in the conjugation of bile acids by forming glycocholate;
- It synthesises methyl tetrahydrofolate, which plays an important role in various enzymatic reactions, such as timidine synthesis;
- It has an inhibitory effect on the spinal cord.
What products containing glycine are available on the market?
Supplements containing glycine are usually available in powder or capsule form.
