Ashwaganda, also called withania sonifera, is an Ayurvedic herb that is classified as an adaptogen due to its ability to relieve stress and contribute to the body's immunity.

Ashwaganda originates from the dry subtropical climates of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It is easy to grow in temperate climates (a year-round plant).

Withania somnifera roots consist primarily of compounds known as withanolides, which have unique health-promoting properties.

Withanolides are similar, both in action and appearance, to the active ingredients of Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), known as ginsenosides.
