Lactic acid

It is used in cosmetic preparations or ovules to regulate pH.

It helps reduce hyperkeratosis, which is characteristic of warts. It has a caustic action, destroying the hyperkeratinised tissue of the wart.

It has an antiseptic action.

It is a component of products for the local treatment of warts and a component of ovules with the role of balancing the pH of the vaginal flora.

As a cosmetic ingredient, lactic acid contributes to skin cell renewal, helps exfoliate, gives shine to hair, and improves the appearance and texture of the skin. It regulates the pH of products that need higher acidity.

The acid is used in cosmetic compositions to adjust pH and has good affinity with skin and hair. It removes dead cells and hair cuticles (dandruff) through its keratolytic action, improves skin hydration and makes hair shiny.

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which include lactic acid, prevent pore blockage, exfoliate the stratum corneum, remove dead cells and prevent them from adhering to the skin. In addition, they allow the skin to regenerate, stimulate collagen and elastin production, thus contributing to smoother skin, reduce wrinkles and pigmentation spots; improve the appearance and texture of the skin; give shine to the hair; activate the conditioning emulsifier used in hair care products; regulate the acidity of cosmetic products, reducing their pH.

Lactic acid should not be applied directly to the skin.

It can be included as an acidifying ingredient in cosmetic products that also contain water: gels, serums, toners, lotions, masks, creams, cleansers, shampoos, etc.

To adjust the acidity of a homemade cosmetic product, add it gradually, drop by drop, measuring the pH until the desired value is achieved. As an ingredient in depigmenting or exfoliating compositions, a pH of approx. 3.5 is required for the exfoliating effect to be achieved; it is recommended to perform a tolerance test before using a chemical exfoliating preparation.

It can be used in combination with other alpha hydroxy acids: tartaric, glycolic, kojic or fruit acids.
