Chlorella is the richest known source of chlorophyll, the "blood of plants" that gives it its emerald green color.

Chlorella cell walls have three layers, the thicker middle layer containing cellulose microfibrils and the outer layer containing polymerized carotenoid material. This external cellular material is most likely what gives Chlorella its detoxifying effects.

The cell wall protects cell components from external oxidizing agents. Chlorella with broken walls is more sensitive to air and light, can degrade, and has a lower content of vitamins and trace elements.
