Megaderm

Virbac Megaderm is available as an oral solution packaged in single-dose sachets.

The product comes in boxes containing 28 sachets, with each dose designed for daily or intermittent administration. There are two main variants: 4 ml sachets for dogs and cats weighing under 10 kg and 8 ml sachets for heavier animals. 

Megaderm Virbac is indicated for the management of dermatological conditions in dogs and cats, including allergic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, keratinisation disorders and other conditions characterised by impairment of the skin barrier. 

The product may be used prophylactically in animals with normal skin but a history of dermatological problems, to maintain skin health and coat condition. In canine atopic dermatitis, the administration of Megaderm may help reduce the need for corticosteroids, thus playing an adjunctive role in complex therapies.

Megaderm dog and cat is administered orally by mixing the contents of the sachet into the animal’s daily food, which facilitates acceptance and compliance. 

The usual dose is one application per day; however, depending on the severity of the skin condition, the frequency may be adjusted to one application every two days. 

The dosage regimen should be tailored individually, depending on body weight, clinical status and response to treatment. Regular use is essential for achieving optimal results, as essential fatty acids have a cumulative effect on skin structure.

Megaderm for dogs and cats is generally well tolerated, but is contraindicated in animals with known hypersensitivity to any of the product’s components, including vegetable or fish oils. 

It should also be used with caution in animals with severe metabolic disorders or liver disease, where lipid metabolism may be impaired. In the absence of sufficient data, administration to pregnant or lactating animals should only be carried out on the advice of a veterinarian.

Essential fatty acids play a structural role in cell membranes and the lipid layer of the epidermis, which is why their integration into skin metabolism takes time. The product contains evening primrose oil, sunflower oil and cold-water fish oil, rich sources of bioactive fatty acids, as well as vitamins A and E, which enhance the antioxidant and regenerative effects. 

The antioxidants included in the formula contribute to the product’s stability and help protect the fatty acids from oxidative degradation.

In general, Megaderm has a favourable safety profile, and adverse reactions are rare. In some cases, mild digestive disturbances may occur, such as transient diarrhoea or changes in stool consistency, particularly at the start of treatment. 

These symptoms are usually self-limiting and do not require discontinuation of treatment. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, and may manifest as pruritus or skin erythema.

Megaderm can be used in combination with various dermatological therapies, including corticosteroids, antibiotics, antifungals or topical products, without causing significant interactions. 

In fact, concurrent use may have a synergistic effect, helping to reduce inflammation and accelerate skin regeneration. No adverse interactions with food have been reported, as the product is designed to be taken alongside daily meals.

Data on overdose are limited, but the administration of excessive amounts of fatty acids may lead to digestive disorders, such as diarrhoea or vomiting. 

Management of overdose is symptomatic and involves reducing the dose or temporarily stopping administration.

Megaderm should be stored at room temperature, in a dry place away from direct light, to prevent the degradation of essential fatty acids. Sachets should be used immediately after opening to maintain the stability and efficacy of the product. The aluminium packaging provides effective protection against oxidation.
